Spartan Class Retreats Continue to Build Bonds

The 6th grade Spartan class spent three days at the southeast Austin Stoney Creek Ranch in New Ulm, Texas. Students had the ultimate opportunity to connect with new friends, St. Stephen’s instructors and the outdoors. More than 60 new St. Stephen’s students arrived on The Hill from more than 30 different elementary schools.

“This is a chance for the students and their teachers to bond and learn more about each other,” said Middle School History Instructor Octavia Sadler. “Making connections early in the year helps with a smoother transition and happier kids.”

Nature's Classroom Institute, who has facilitated the 6th grade retreat for nearly two decades, led engaging nature-centered activities and team building events.

Head Librarian Michelle Andrews and Sadler have organized the retreat for multiple years, and said the standout group activities included a wolf pack simulation game and a trial of the Once-ler from "The Lorax."

After three days on the ranch, students returned to a welcome home party complete with their parents excitedly waiting to greet them and St. Stephen's seniors who cheered and formed a human archway for the 6th graders to run through.

“The 6th graders together with the seniors were a great reminder of our special Spartan community,” said Sadler.
