The College Counseling Office at St. Stephen’s is staffed by four full-time college counselors and an office manager. The counselors offer more than 80 years’ combined experience in the field of admission and college counseling. They work as a team to support and engage students, stay abreast of current trends, and cultivate professional relationships.
The counseling team hosts more than 120 college representatives each fall to visit with juniors and seniors, and the counselors also attend professional conferences and visit college campuses each year. At St. Stephen’s, the process of college planning is student-centered: the core of the college counseling program is the conference between student and counselor. Individual college conferences are available to all upper school students, with a required sequence of conferences in the junior and senior years that are crucial to the planning process. The counselors encourage communication from families and prepare student and school information for transmission to the colleges.
In the belief that each student has the right and the responsibility to make a personal choice of college, the school entrusts to the student the responsibilities of investigating colleges, applying to selected institutions, and meeting deadlines. The school, however, encourages students and provides active guidance through the process, within the above-mentioned series of individual, group, and parent meetings.
St. Stephen's students tend to be adventuresome and individualistic. This independent thinking makes the college counseling process at St. Stephen's an exciting journey for all involved.
