Middle School Service Learning
Service learning is a pillar of the St Stephen's Middle School experience and philosophy. Opportunities for education, growth in awareness, and tangible participation in both local and global issues are woven throughout the curriculum, as well as provided through extra-curricular activities. Three strategic partnerships are emphasized: El Buen Samaritano, Mobile Loaves and Fishes, and our sister school in Haiti, St. Etienne. The Middle School also provides means for direct response to societal crises as they arise, including natural disasters and political injustices, through fundraising and Jetter writing campaigns. Grade levels participate in education and service trips, such as homelessness and refugee simulations, beach clean-ups, invasive species removal, and gardening at Community First.
The Middle School service learning experience culminates in our 8th grade D-term series ,vith Chapel speakers throughout the fall. In addition, all 8th graders research current issues, serve across the city and provide reflective presentations to the school community. A Middle School sunnner service camp also is offered in order to deepen the service learning experience.
