Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

St. Stephen's Commitment to Creating a Community of Belonging

In alignment with our Episcopal Identity and our Mission and Core Values, St. Stephen’s supports diversity as an essential component of a quality education that encourages respect for and empowerment of the individual and discourages the formation of stereotypes and prejudices. St. Stephen’s commitment to diversity and its dedication to fostering an equitable and inclusive community broadens the educational experience of all students. Our commitment to creating a place of belonging is an ongoing process, which will continue to strengthen and enhance our school community.

The school welcomes students from a variety of backgrounds and identities. We support and nurture their differences and work to prepare them for their future contributions to an increasingly diverse world.

Curriculum

In many ways, diversity, equity and inclusion is the foundation of the curriculum of St. Stephen’s. Through readings, classroom discussions and movies and through lessons taught at every grade level, multiple voices and differing backgrounds at SSES are integral to our strong academic program.

In Remembrance of Yvonne Adams

Yvonne Adams took over as St. Stephen's first director of diversity in 2010, and began coordinating and guiding the diversity efforts that were already underway. She served as the director of equity & inclusion and was appointed to the school's senior administrative team from 2018 up until her passing in November of 2023.

Yvonne was instrumental in teaching students, staff, and faculty how to navigate difficult conversations about a range of topics — from bigotry and hatred, to DACA and deportation, to protecting the human rights of natural disaster victims. Ultimately, she wanted to move students beyond tolerance to true understanding so that they would become independent learners and responsible and compassionate citizens of the world.
