Senior Nights and Upcoming Winter Pep Rally
Spartan spirit was evident on campus throughout last week as teams geared up for another week of Southwest Preparatory Conference play. This week, the Varsity Girls and Boys Basketball teams will hold their Senior Night games and winter athletic teams will be celebrated during the Winter Pep Rally this Thursday in Clayton Gym.

Girls Soccer
The Girls Varsity Soccer team defeated Houston Christian High School on Friday night in the team’s Senior Night celebration. On Saturday morning, the Spartans didn’t back down and dominated the pitch against The John Cooper School in a 4-0 win. The two convincing victories over the weekend brings the Spartans to a 4-1-1 conference record on the season. Goals came from Savannah Schutt ’27 (2), Kayla Fink ’24, and Espi Weatherspoon ’24. Center back Phoebe George ’24 also recorded three goals, in addition to her role in helping the defense secure shutouts in both games. Goalkeeper Julia Conkling ’25 recorded clean sheets in her first two starts as a Spartan!

“With many of our girls out this past weekend, we had to ask players to step into roles and positions they are not typically used to,” remarked Head Coach Andy Aceves. “The strength and depth of our squad showed with convincing wins against Houston Christian and John Cooper, two competitive SPC opponents. Our attacking players did a brilliant job of sharing the ball and creating goal-scoring opportunities for each other.”

“In our last five SPC games, we have scored 12 goals and conceded none. We’re playing great soccer in every phase of the game, but what thrills me most is that our wins are always team wins. We have players with tremendous individual quality, but every single player on our roster has made a massive contribution to our success throughout this SPC campaign.”

Boys Soccer
The Boys Varsity Soccer team celebrated Senior Night with a 2-1 victory over Houston Christian on Friday evening. Captain Chris Tapia ’24 led the way on Friday night with an assist and a game-winning goal. This marks the Spartan’s first SPC win for the season.

“I cannot think of a better ending to congratulate and honor our seniors for all their hard work and commitment to St. Stephen's athletics," said Head Coach Andy Lopez. “The team has improved tremendously, and I am looking forward to seeing the fruits of our labor at the SPC Tournament.”

Girls Basketball
The Girls Varsity Basketball team showed resilience with a strong 56-27 win against John Cooper on Saturday, rebounding from a tough loss to Houston Christian the night before. The victory was a testament to the team's unity, with all twelve players making significant contributions, and an impressive 10 out of 12 players scoring in the game. As Senior Night approaches this Tuesday against Grace Academy of Georgetown, the team is eager to honor Alice Wilkerson ’24, Asha Williams ’24 and Harriet Crofut ’24 prior to the 6:30 p.m. game.

Having been narrowly defeated by Grace Academy in December at the Yvonne Adams Classic in Clayton Gym, SSES Girls Head Varsity Coach Dustin Armstrong said “We are fueled by a desire to redeem ourselves.” The team will finish the week with a conference game at Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart in Houston this Friday.
