Spartan Athletes of the Week: Clare Burkhart and Basil Baldwin
Congratulations to St. Stephen’s Varsity Field Hockey player Clare Burkhart ’26 and Varsity Football Athlete Basil Baldwin ’26 for earning Spartan Athlete of the Week honors!
Quarterback Basil Baldwin ’26 had an outstanding performance in the Spartan Varsity Football team’s season-opening victory over the New Braunfels Thunder. Baldwin threw for 246 yards and four touchdowns, completing 12 of 19 attempts on the night and contributing to the team’s 34-19 win. The victory was especially sweet as this was Baldwin’s first time back on the field in a Spartan jersey after sustaining an injury during a preseason game last fall.
"Basil exemplifies what it means to overcome adversity, leading his team with the poise of a seasoned veteran,” remarked Football Program Head Jay Patterson. “I'm excited to see how the season unfolds and how Basil continues to guide this team through November."
Baldwin and the football team will battle St. Augustine High School (Laredo, TX) in the Spartans’ home opener on Friday at 7:30 p.m. on Denius Field.
Midfielder Clare Burkhart ’26 stepped up in the Spartan's 2-1 victory over St. Andrew's Episcopal School last week, knocking in the team's game-winning goal off of a rebound with less than five minutes on the clock. While adding to the scoresheet secured the team's win, Burkhart's solid understanding of the game and consistency in distribution helped the Spartans gain control of the match after a rocky start.
"Clare is a true utility player," noted Field Hockey Program Head Chelsea Richards. "Technically and tactically she can make a positive impact on the pitch across multiple lines."
You can catch Burkhart and her teammates in their first conference match of the season on Friday, September 6 at 6:30 p.m. on Phipps Field as they take on Holland Hall School (Tulsa, OK).
