How To Plan for Loop 360 Construction and Its Travel Disruptions

Crews with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) continue making progress on major road improvements near the St. Stephen’s campus. As you sit in traffic or wait for the light to change, we want to continue informing you about the latest construction changes.

Lane Closures This Week
Beginning Wednesday, December 11 to Friday, December 13 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., drivers should expect lane closures on the southbound Loop 360 connector road between Pennybacker Bridge and Cedar Street.

Early 2025 - Next Big Closure: Westlake Drive
The Westlake Drive/Loop 360 intersection closure will likely have the largest impact on the St. Stephen’s community. This closure will allow crews to excavate that section to make way for the new main lanes of Loop 360. This closure is projected to last about 5 to 6 months. The project team has 109 working days to build the new Westlake Drive bridge.

Loop 360 Public Involvement contact Katherine Lee Seth says this closure is slated for “early 2025” — potentially February or March 2025. Weather delays and the timeline for opening the temporary southbound lanes on Loop 360 between Westlake Drive and the Pennybacker Bridge could affect this closure. TxDOT plans to share maps and alternate routes in the coming weeks to help the community navigate the closure.

Big Picture Recap
The scope of the overall Westlake Drive/Cedar Street portion of the project is to create new Loop 360 main lanes that flow underneath the Westlake Drive and Cedar Street intersections. The new intersections will be located above the main lanes and connect to new feeder roads running on each side of Loop 360. This requires TxDOT crews to temporarily move the current traffic lanes over so they can excavate in the middle of the roadway, where the new main lanes of traffic will eventually flow. See more information here.

Over the last few months, two temporary northbound lanes were added along Loop 360 between Westlake Drive and Bold Ruler Way. Seth says crews are actively working to “smooth out” the temporary lanes where the pavement is uneven and steeply angled on the curvy road lined with concrete barriers near the Loop 360 entrance of Davenport Village.

The next big goal is to open similar temporary lanes on the southbound side of the highway by January 17. This will clear the way for crews to dig out the new main lanes of Loop 360.

As you may have asked the question repeatedly, when will the entire project be complete? Right now, TxDOT estimates late-2025. We will continue to keep the St. Stephen’s community updated. To view more information and details about the overall project and timelines click here.
