Spartan Athletes of the Week: Lex Gonzalez & Emerson Yorio
Emerson Yorio '28 was a spark for Varsity Field Hockey last weekend in the team's 7-0 victory over The Oakridge School (Arlington, TX). While she didn't score a goal for the Spartans, Yorio recorded three assists in the match. Her transition to attack was fluid and sharp as she released the ball at just the right time for teammates to finish plays.
"Emerson works to be in the right place at the right time," remarked Field Hockey Program Head Chelsea Richards. "Spatially, she understands the game well in real-time, makes changes on the fly, and doesn't back down from physical play."
Yorio and her teammates travel to San Antonio on Thursday to take on St. Mary's Hall at 5:45 PM and return to Phipps for a home game against Greenhill (Dallas, TX) on Saturday, October 19.
Lex Gonzalez '27 dominated the court last week in the Spartans’ convincing 3-0 victory over crosstown rival St. Andrew’s. As a middle blocker, Gonzalez hit for .571 in attacking play and had a hand in controlling both sides of the court.
“Lex has been a consistent voice at practice,” praised Boys Volleyball Program Head Dakota Goin. “He comes ready to work and motivate his teammates day-in and day-out.”
The Spartans face their next challenge in SPC play on Friday, October 18 at home against Awty International School (Houston).
