Spartan Athletes of the Week: Annabel Furlong and Mirta O’Mahony
Congratulations to Varsity Basketball player Annabel Furlong ’25 and Varsity Soccer player Mirta O’Mahony ’27 for earning Spartan Athlete of the Week honors!
Annabel Furlong, the team co-captain and 11th grade center for the Spartan Girls Basketball team, delivered a standout performance in their recent game against St. John's School on January 6. Setting a new personal record, she grabbed an impressive 16 rebounds showcasing her dominance on the court. With eight points scored, Furlong was extremely close to achieving her first double-double, demonstrating her well-rounded skills. Furlong's contribution was pivotal in providing the team with the momentum they needed to secure the victory over the Mavericks. Additionally, her defensive prowess was evident with three steals during the game, highlighting her all-around impact on the team's success. Coach Armstrong proudly boasted about Furlong’s impressive performance.
“Annabel is a rebounding machine,” he stated. “Thanks to her defensive effort, the team was able to overtake a strong St. John’s team. She gave us the opportunity to secure the ball and come out victorious in the end.”
Mirta O’Mahony is the goalkeeper for the St. Stephen’s Varsity Girls Soccer team. Her leadership and ability to make saves under pressure is unmatched, and a big reason why the Spartans have been so successful thus far. She is a top-class goalkeeper, and in training she routinely makes the kinds of saves one would expect to see on TV. O’Mahony is extremely talented with her feet, which allows the team to build out from the back when the Spartans are in possession. She has even scored some beautiful goals in her two cameos at center forward.
“Mirta is just an exceptional athlete and all-around soccer player,” said Head Coach Andy Aceves. “She was massive in our 1-0 win against St. John’s. She played a huge role in keeping a shutout against the most dangerous attacking team in the conference!”
