E.P.I.C. Teammates of the Week: Avi Schoenbaum and Sydney Durrett
Each week St. Stephen’s Middle School Athletics recognizes Spartans who represent the four pillars of the Middle School Athletic Creed: Excellence, Pride, Integrity, and Commitment - E.P.I.C. Teammates. Congratulations to this week's honorees, Avi Schoenbaum ’30 and Sydney Durrett ’28!
Avi Schoenbaum is a multipurpose athlete for the Spartan Track and Field team as well as a member of the Spartan Cross Country team. Avi runs the 50-meter and 400-meter dashes, plus the 1600-meter race (mile run) and participated in the long jump this season. The coaches noted Avi's commitment and work ethic during practice as his most EPIC qualities! "I appreciate Avi's positive attitude and all the dedication he puts into practice every day!” said Coach Greg Cook. “He may not be the fastest runner or the farthest jumper, but he sure works hard, listens well and implements feedback, and strives for excellence in everything he does!" The future is bright for Avi!!!
Despite an injury that kept her sidelined for the first month of the season, Sydney Durrett showed up at practice everyday, helped when and where she could, learned from her coaches, and supported her teammates. She gradually worked her way back on the track and ended up running personal bests in each of her three running events last week at the Austin Inter-Parochial League Meet. Sydney was the AIPL Champion in the 400-meter dash for the third year, running a personal record of 65.51 seconds! Coach Cook said, "Sydney showed up every day and was focused even when she wasn't able to participate. She could've given up, but instead, she worked rehabbing and was ready and able to run really well at the AIPL Meet!" This perseverance makes her this week's EPIC TEAMMATE of the Week!
