Spartan Athletes of the Week: Juanjo Castillo and Harshini Murugan

Congratulations to St. Stephen’s Varsity Tennis players Juanjo Castillo ’26 and Harshini Murugan ’26 for earning Spartan Athlete of the Week honors!

 

Juanjo Castillo has been an incredible asset to the tennis team this season. He went undefeated in all three of his matches this past week, while playing with a new doubles partner for each match. Castillo helped the team to three straight victories against St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, The John Cooper School and Houston Christian High School.

 

“Juanjo showed his versatility by adapting his game to best suit each of his partners' different playstyles,” said head Tennis Coach Jason Haugen. “While still maintaining his strong positive energy and powerful return that he's been known for all season."

 

Harshini Murugan won both of the matches she played this last week, taking a singles win to clinch the match on senior night against St. Andrew's in our 3-2 win. She also played her first doubles match of the season, where she and Leigh Wittliff ’25 pulled out a hard fought match against a strong John Cooper team 6-4 in the third set.

 

Head Tennis Coach Jason Haugen was pleased with Murugan’s performance. “Harshini has helped the girls team tremendously with her play this season. We are excited to see how she performs at the SPC tournament coming up.”
