Spartan athletes are back in action as they take on top teams from Texas and beyond. The fall season, featuring girls and boys volleyball, football, cross country, and field hockey is off to a dynamic start that is sure to deliver exhilarating moments and standout victories. Fans can expect stiff competition beginning with Varsity Football kicking off its season this Friday at 7:30 p.m. against the New Braunfels Thunder. Starting the season on the road presents an early challenge for the Spartans, but it’s one they’re eager to face head-on. Following a successful spring camp and a strong start to summer practices, Head Varsity Football Coach Jay Patterson and his team have shown great promise through preseason practices and scrimmages. With a balanced mix of returning talent and fresh faces, this year’s squad is poised to achieve great things.
These young men are not just aiming for victories—they’re setting their sights and dedication on bringing home a championship season and trophy. Coaching her first season at St. Stephen’s, Girls Head Varsity Volleyball Coach Cursty Le Roux and her Spartan Volleyball team have worked hard since the start of the preseason. The team’s dedication in every practice has not gone unnoticed.
“Our players are learning to sustain high-level play for longer periods, and it’s evident in how comfortable they’re becoming with their system. From the very first serve, the Spartans are setting the tone—showing up with purpose and battling for every point,” said Coach Le Roux. “The way we compete and push each other is exactly what it takes to elevate our game. What stands out the most is how quickly our volleyball IQ is growing. We’re making smarter decisions, adapting on the fly and showing that we can hang with anyone.”
If the team continues building on this foundation, they’re poised to surprise a lot of opponents as they progress through the season. Coach Le Roux is confident in the team's ability to show rapid week to week growth and she is excited about what the season has in store.
Boys Varsity Volleyball Head Coach Dakota Goin and his team will hit the ground running with their first major test at the Houston Cup in early September. Following the Cup, the players will dive straight into conference play with challenging matchups against Dallas’ St. Mark's School of Texas and Greenhill School the following week.
“The preseason went really well this year,” said Coach Goin. “Our goal is to chase perfection and strive for excellence, and the boys are fully committed to putting in the work. Their dedication and effort have us very excited for the season ahead.”
Spartan Varsity Field Hockey hosted three teams recently for some friendly preseason matches. Despite the heat and losing 10 seniors in the 2023-24 academic year, the Spartans came prepared and ready to compete.
The team recently scrimmaged at home against Denver’s Colorado Academy. The reigning state champions opened scoring, but the Spartans recovered quickly. As the team settled in together, they dictated possession and tempo. Darby Osborne ’26 recorded a hatrick, and the team worked through the kinks of playing full-field with new teammates.
The Spartans next match up was against Trinity Valley School from Fort Worth, Texas in a non-conference game on Phipps Field. Trinity Valley managed to jump ahead, capitalizing on quick transition attacking opportunities. St. Stephen’s demonstrated patience and persistence once again as they battled to stay in the game. Darby Osborne and Maya Patel ’26 both notched goals for the Spartans, but the team came up short, finishing 2-3.
The Spartans hosted their final opponent of the weekend against Houston powerhouse St. John's School. Knowing that the match would likely be a defensive battle, the Spartans remained true to the game strategy. After holding the Mavericks scoreless in the first quarter, it was clear the Spartan defensive unit was determined to make St. John's fight for their goals. Standout goalkeeper Jadyn Houston ’27 tallied 12 saves and St. John's was only able to sneak in three goals before the final whistle. The team effort to maintain composure against a talented side was impressive.
Looking ahead, the Spartan Field Hockey team will compete in their first Southwest Preparatory Conference matches on Friday, September 6 and Saturday, September 7 as the team is scheduled to take on Holland Hall School out of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Casady School of Oklahoma City on Phipps Field.
In his second season as Cross Country Head Coach, Greg Cook and his team are poised to make a significant impact in all competitions this year. Despite the excessive heat in Austin, the team kicked off the season with early morning practices, and our athletes consistently showed up with positive attitudes ready to work hard. During their recent meet, the Spartan Cross Country girls’ team placed second overall, with seven athletes medaling in the top 15. Audrey Wan ’25 led the charge, finishing fourth. The boys' team narrowly missed first place by just four points, with standout performances from Ben Oehler ’26, Oscar Whiteley-Bermeo ’27 and Ben Patrick ’27, who finished third, fourth, and fifth, respectively.
Middle School athletic practices and games will be getting underway on The Hill soon.
