Spartan Scoreboard: Spartans Start is Solid

The Boys and Girls Varsity Cross Country teams delivered an outstanding performance at the Hays CISD Invitational last Friday. The meet was filled with personal bests, highlighted by Audrey Wan’s ’25 impressive 19:30 finish, breaking the 20-minute barrier for the first time. On the boys' side, Ben Oehler ’26 clocked in at 16:52, and Oscar Whiteley-Bermeo ’27 followed closely with a time of 16:53, both breaking 17 minutes for the first time. The Spartans continue to set new milestones as they push toward a successful season.

“I was proud of how our student-athletes competed this past weekend,” Head Coach Greg Cook stated after Saturday’s meet. “We are constantly striving for better results, and I am excited to see our development each week.”

Boys and Girls Varsity Spartan Cross Country’s next competition will be this Saturday, September 21st, at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock beginning at 7:00 am.

Varsity Field Hockey hosted Our Lady of Good Counsel (Olney, MD) and Awty International School (Houston, TX) over the weekend for a round-robin. The team focused on starting stronger this week, and it showed! On Saturday morning, St. Stephen's defeated Good Counsel, 3-1, and on Saturday afternoon, St. Stephen's earned the win over Awty International, 5-0. The attacking load was shared across both games with five different goalscorers adding their name to the scoresheet on Saturday - Kate Moriarty ’26, Lila Ogle ’27 (2), Darby Osborne ’26 (2), Charlie Vogel ’27 (2), and Maya Patel ’26.

"We played great hockey this weekend," remarked Field Hockey Program Head Chelsea Richards. "It was a lot of fun to see the girls connect on the field and own different parts of the game. I'm excited to build on our Saturday successes as we prepare for Southwest Preparatory Conference play in Fort Worth and Dallas."

The Field Hockey team plays this upcoming Friday and Saturday against Trinity Valley School (Fort Worth, TX) and Episcopal School of Dallas (Dallas, TX).

Varsity Football engaged in a hard-fought battle against the Williamson County Falcons (Wilco, TX), narrowly falling 44-41 after a late-game comeback attempt. Although the team got off to a slow start, they put together impressive drives in the second half to close the gap. Led by standout running back James Kim ’26, who racked up 112 yards and 2 touchdowns on 12 carries, the Spartans dominated the 3rd and 4th quarters.

"While we started slow, the team showed great resilience down the stretch. I'm proud of their fight and determination not to give up when they were down,” commented Head Football Coach Jay Patterson.

The Spartan Varsity Football team will visit the Austin Royals this Friday, looking to get back on track as the season nears its midpoint. The Spartans, now 2-1, aim to hand the Royals their second loss of the season as they enter the game with a 2-1 record as well.

Girls Varsity Volleyball competed twice last week, taking on Westwood High School and Kinkaid School (Houston). The team dropped the game against Westwood, but bounced back to earn the win against Kinkaid, 3-0.

“After making adjustments, moving from a two-setter system to a 5, we’re definitely being pushed out of our comfort zone,” said Head Coach Cursty Le Roux. “Our strength lies in our serving and passing, and we served at 90%, which put immense pressure on our opponents.”

The team aims to build on their success this weekend with away games against Trinity Valley School (Fort Worth, TX) on Friday and Episcopal School of Dallas (Dallas, TX) on Saturday.

Boys Varsity Volleyball had a strong weekend in Dallas. Though the team didn’t get the result they were hoping for against St. Mark’s School of Dallas, Coach Dakota Goin expressed pride in their bounce-back win against Greenhill on Saturday.

"We deviated a bit from our plan on Friday against St. Mark’s," commented Coach Goin, "but we turned things around and swept Greenhill on Saturday by getting back to our identity and focusing on what we've worked on in practice. This team is special. After being tested by multiple injuries, they came together and found a way to win."

Individually, Middle Blocker Drew Bonner ’27 had a standout performance, hitting 7/10 for an impressive .700%. Fellow Middle Blocker Lex Gonzalez ’27 was equally dominant, hitting 9/11 for .727%, while Charlie Dugan ’25 led the way from the service line, delivering clutch serves throughout the match.

The Spartan Varsity team hosts Fort Worth Country Day School (Fort Worth, Texas) on Friday at 5:00 pm in Clayton Gym and Trinity Valley School (Fort Worth, Texas) on Saturday at 11:00 am for Southwest Preparatory Conference matches.
