Spartan Varsity Football Advances in the Playoffs & Athletes Finish Strong at Fall SPC Championships

Varsity Football kicked off the first round of the Texas Association of Independent Athletic Organizations (TAIAO) 6-Man playoffs this past weekend, securing a 41-24 win over Founders Classical Academy (Leander). Offensively, standouts Basil Baldwin ’26 and Luke Mabley ’26 led the charge, joined by freshman Sam Jones ’28, who added 77 all-purpose yards and a touchdown.

The defense had an equally impressive night, with Sebastian Estep ’25 and Sebastian Creixell ’26 leading the effort. The Spartans intercepted three passes (two returned for touchdowns), forced two fumbles, and ended the game with a fumble recovery, sealing the win and a promising playoff start.

“For the fourth season in a row, our team has advanced past the first round of the playoffs,” says Head Coach Jay Patterson. “I’m proud of how the team has continued to get better each and every week and I am looking forward to a rematch against Gloria Deo Academy (Bulverde) next week.”

The team takes the field against Bracken Christian in Bulverde, Texas, Saturday, November 16, at 3:00 p.m.

Come cheer on our Spartans!

Varsity Cross Country delivered a strong performance at the Fall 2024 Southwest Preparatory Conference (SPC) Championships in Dallas this past weekend, with the boys’ team securing a second-place finish in the 4A Championship. Graham Boles ’25 took first place overall, with Oscar Whiteley Bermeo ’27 and Ben Oehler ’26 following close behind, finishing fourth and sixth, respectively. On the girls side, Audrey Wan ’25 medaled with a seventh-place finish in the SPC 4A Championship.

"We’re thrilled with how our athletes performed under pressure," said Cross Country Program Director Greg Cook. "While we will miss our seniors next year, I am excited to see the growth of our other athletes moving into next season."

Varsity Field Hockey had a thrilling first-round win at the SPC tournament. After falling behind 2-0 to Hockaday (Dallas), the Spartans rallied in the second half to tie the game with a penalty corner goal with time expired. Neither team scored in the 7v7 sudden-victory overtime period, but the Spartans prevailed in shootouts.

On Friday, St. Stephen’s faced top-seed Kinkaid (Houston). Unfortunately, the team could not recover from giving up two early goals, resulting in a 0-3 loss in the semifinals. On Saturday, the Spartans battled Episcopal High School (Houston) in a physical match for third place. Despite scoring first, the team was unable to maintain the lead, ending the match 1-2, and finishing fourth in the 4A Division.

“It’s always tough to end the season on a loss,” said Field Hockey Program Director Chelsea Richards. “I’m proud to coach this group of girls — they played with composure against some talented opponents over the weekend, and even when things didn’t land in our favor, kept their heads up.”

Varsity Boys Volleyball entered the SPC playoffs as the third overall seed from the North Zone and battled in a hard-fought series against The Awty International School (Houston). While the team sustained an early attacking momentum in each of the sets, the Spartans fell to Awty 3-0. On Saturday, the Spartans battled opponent Fort Worth Country Day, falling 3-1.

“While the season didn’t end how we would have hoped, I am proud of how this team performed all season,” says Head Coach Dakota Goin. “I am excited to see how our team grows over this offseason into next year.”

Varsity Girls Volleyball went 2-1 on the weekend in the SPC 4A Division. The team dropped their first game against Greenhill (Addison), 0-3. On Friday, the Spartans rallied to win their match against Kinkaid (Houston) and again on Saturday against Houston Christian (Houston) to finish fifth overall.

“This has been a season of growth for our squad,” said Head Coach Cursty LeRoux. “Looking back to preseason in August and thinking about how far we have come this fall, I’m already excited to think about what next season will bring!”
